Dilla Schooling Producers With “Donuts”

Harking back to the days when classic rhythm and blue reigned supreme, Jay Dee or J Dilla has throughout his career brought bits, pieces and the feelings of a bygone era back through his innovative sample heavy soulful concoctions.
Dilla has been an underground favourite for a while now and has helped notable artists like Common, D’Angelo, Q-Tip, De La Soul, The Pharcyde and Talib Kweli find a groove.
Now he has turned his attention into earning himself some richly deserved, wider recognition.
With “Donuts” just beginning to prove (my attempt at a baking metaphor!) he is set to accomplish this.
The album contains 31 tracks, all of them barely a minute and a half in length, all entirely instrumental.
All of the tasty treats contained within, could conceivably be fashioned into any number of hits for Ghostface, Common or Kanye West.
But the beauty lies in appreciating the genius behind the work, whom of late, has been rumoured to be suffering the affects of an unknown illness, which has confined him to bed, making this work even the more remarkable for the circumstances in which it was created.
“Donuts” is instores now, so don’t sleep, go out and cop it.
Whilst your at it, check out his work with Slum Village (his own group) and his other beat tapes turned albums.
